Divorce DecreeGetting through a divorce can either be an unpleasant event or an extremely gruesome event, depending on your relationship with your spouse.  The top priority for you should be getting through the divorce with your assets and financial security intact, as well as your integrity.  In order to get through these murky, unsafe waters of divorce, you have to get proper advice.  Someone needs to tell you what to do!

Fighting out my Divorce

My divorce was long and drawn out, and in the end, I was shocked with how everything was settled.  You do not want to be me, or end up with practically nothing like myself.  So as that you do not go through what I did, I thought I would spell it out for you.  Throughout life you tell yourself that materials are only possessions with little emotional value, which stays true until the day you decide to get a divorce.  When that day comes everything becomes emotionally valuable, and ironing out who gets what can be a dreadful.

Take Action

The first step in protecting yourself and your assets and winning over the court system is your legal representation.  Your will to put up a fight comes in very close with number 1.  If you are not separating on mutual grounds, then every aspect of your married life becomes a battlefield.  Your children, your cars, your house and even your puppies are points of dispute.  The divorce chapter in your life will definitely test your strength of character as well as the strength of your wallet, so be prepared.

Get Legal Council

Regardless of whether or not you are separating on affable terms, you MUST get legal representation, better known as a lawyer.  Leaving this most important task until the end of the game may lead to loosing assets and rights unnecessarily.  So if you have not gotten a lawyer yet, get one now.

Protect yourself by educating yourself

Do your research.  Researching laws and divorce rights and strategies has not been easier, with the internet, you should be able to get your basic information without hesitation and refer back to your lawyer.  Do not put your lawyer on a pedestal and assume he/she knows everything; they do not, and may skip or overlook something.  This ’something’ may prove critical to your case.  Your lawyer only puts up one-third of the fight; you have to put in the rest.  Always remember that you can not do it on your own and your lawyer can not do it without you.
